This brush rest comes from Longquan, where the craft has been passed down for a thousand years. It is made by Wang Haiyan, an inheritor whose hands carry the weight of tradition.
Its form is drawn from an ancient plum branch — twisted, weathered, stretching sideways as if caught mid-growth. The branch rises and falls, curves and turns, creating natural resting points for brushes of different sizes. A classic form in the scholar’s studio, it also lends itself to the tea table — a quiet companion for a tea scoop or needle, or a resting place for cutlery at the table.
Every detail is shaped by hand — no moulds, no shortcuts. The bark is hand-sculpted with uneven ridges and crevices, as if weathered by decades of wind and frost. Each bend, each knot, each branching point is finished by the artisan’s touch.
The plum blossoms and buds are made one by one — each bud pinched, shaped, and attached by hand, then coloured with a second coat of red glaze. Red dots scattered across the bean-green glaze — like the first touch of spring after a long winter.
