This cup is made by Fan Miaojie, a young artisan who has studied under Master Craftsman Li Zhen for over a decade — mastering the craft of Di kiln celadon, hand-finishing, and carving. She draws deeply from Song-dynasty aesthetics and finds inspiration in the natural world, bringing flowers and leaves into the clay.
The cup takes the form of a gardenia in bloom — a lotus-rimmed petal shape, with the rim rising and falling gently like half opened petals. Soft, flowing, and quietly elegant. The form is fully hand finished — every curve, every edge, refined by the artisan’s touch.
The glaze is Fenqing — Pale Dawn Green — thick, warm, and luminous. As the glaze pools and flows, it gathers at the ridges and thins at the edges, revealing subtle lines of white — the signature of hand-thrown celadon.
On the cup, gardenia flowers and leaves are carved into the glaze — delicate, flowing, as if caught in a gentle breeze. The gardenia, an emblem of purity and constancy, is a flower that holds its fragrance long after the bloom has faded. Here, it is caught in clay.
Each cup is unique — in colour, in carving, in glaze flow. Made entirely by hand, from the first pull to the final carve. This is not just a cup. It is the quiet presence of a flower, forever in bloom.
