Title
Ziwei Wood Resting Swan Sculpture
Hand-carved by Li Yongqiang, a representative inheritor of Xianfeng wood carving, a prefecture-level intangible cultural heritage of Enshi Prefecture. Created from a natural piece of ziwei wood root, following its original curves and turns. The swan has a long, curved neck and a gently hooked beak — resting, head turned back, as if it has just risen from the water and glanced back, caught in a moment of grace. 18.8cm long × 18.8cm high. Place it on a desk, and the room comes alive.
Material
Selected ziwei wood
Ziwei wood is hard and resistant to decay, with a straight grain and fine texture. Once polished, its surface is smooth and lustrous — a long-favoured material for traditional root carving. Its roots are especially distinctive — shaped by the changing conditions of their growth, they twist and turn in ways that are impossible to predict, often bearing natural hollows and flowing lines.
And the grain itself is a landscape. The interwoven patterns — light against dark — resemble ink-wash mountains and drifting clouds. Every line is a brushstroke made by time. The artisan who carved this swan simply read the wood’s own language.
Craft & Use
Root carving — the form is not imposed, but drawn from the natural curves of the ziwei root. Every turn and every line of the wood becomes part of the swan’s posture. Here, the made and the found meet — carved, yet not carved; not carved, yet carved.
For the home — place it on a study desk, beside brush and ink; in a living room or entrance, to greet all who arrive; or beside a tea table, where it joins the teapot and cups in quiet harmony. A piece to lift any room.
Small in the hand, grand in presence — at 18.8cm long × 18.8cm high, it is large enough to command attention, yet gentle enough for close study.
