This little fish comes from Longquan, where the craft has been passed down for a thousand years. It is made by Zheng Zhiwen, an artisan whose hands carry the weight of tradition. The glaze is a soft, matte bean-green — quiet, unassuming, alive. Speckles of brown dot the surface, like ripples on a pond, like moss on a river stone. The fish seems to move through water.

This is a mandarin fish — guìyú in Chinese, a name that echoes the word for “noble” or “precious.” In Chinese culture, it has long been a symbol of abundance and good fortune. And in the famous poem of the Tang dynasty: “Peach blossoms flow, and the mandarin fish grows plump.” It carries the quiet ease of a fisherman’s life, the joy of returning home.
