There is celadon, and then there is celadon that has been touched by fire.
This piece comes from Longquan, where the craft has been passed down for a thousand years. It is made by Wang Haiyan, an inheritor whose hands carry the weight of tradition. The glaze is a remarkable ash-green kiln-change — fired at 1300°C in a wood-burning kiln, where ash and flame transform the surface into something no two hands could replicate.
The glaze is never one colour. It is a landscape of shifting tones — sometimes deep as twilight clouds, sometimes pale as morning mist, grey carrying green, green holding grey, like the colour of the sky over Jiangnan in a soft rain. The surface is glossy, luminous, holding light with a quiet, ancient warmth. Against this rich glaze, carved details stand out with unusual clarity — as if they have grown from within the glaze itself, more vivid and three-dimensional than on ordinary celadon.
Each piece is unique. In the wood-fired kiln, every piece catches the flame differently. The same form, the same glaze — yet each emerges with its own gradation, its own flow, its own character. Some lean greener. Some lean greyer. Some show subtle ripples where the glaze moved in the heat. This is not variation. This is the signature of the fire — a dialogue between flame and clay, the mark of a piece that exists only once.
