This cup comes from Longquan, where the craft has been passed down for a thousand years. It is made by Mao Danyun, an artisan born into a renowned celadon family — the daughter of the late celadon master Mao Songlin, who learned the craft first from her father and then from her sister Mao Danyang. She has dedicated herself to the art of sculpted appliqué, and is recognised as one of the foremost contemporary practitioners of this technique.

The form is a meditation cup — rounded and full, with a slightly closed rim, a curved belly, and a steady foot. It sits firmly in the palm, warm and grounded.

The true wonder lies in the plum branch that pierces through the cup wall — the branch emerges from the outside, extending inward, with blossoms reaching toward the rim as if growing naturally from the clay itself. This is why it is called a “plum-branch penetrating cup” — breaking the flatness of an ordinary cup, creating a play of solid and void, of inside and outside.

The body is hand-thrown. The plum branch, blossoms, and buds are built by hand-sculpted appliqué — coils of clay for the branch, pinched petals for the flowers, each one shaped by the artisan’s fingers.
