Enshi Selenium-rich Soil

Enshi, Hubei: The Heart of China and the World’s Selenium Capital

Located near 30°N latitude in central China, Enshi enjoys exceptional natural conditions. With lush mountains, abundant rivers, forest coverage exceeding 70%, a warm and humid climate, deep soil layers, plentiful rainfall, and frequent mist, it is an ideal region for tea cultivation. What makes Enshi truly remarkable is its rare independent selenium deposit, forming a complete selenium-rich ecosystem that profoundly impacts agriculture and the health industry.

Core Resource: The World’s Only Independent Selenium Deposit

Enshi is home to the world’s only proven independent selenium deposit, with selenium reserves reaching 640,000 tons and an average grade of 3,637.5 ppm. Local concentrations can exceed 6,300 ppm, far surpassing the international standard for selenium-rich soil (≥400 ppm). This discovery has reshaped global understanding of selenium distribution and marks a significant breakthrough for China in the field of rare elements.

Soil Characteristics: Widespread and High Selenium Content

Selenium is found in 96.41% of the soil across the prefecture, with 59.53% meeting the selenium-rich standard, creating the world’s largest natural selenium-rich biosphere. The average selenium content in farmland, gardens, and grassland soil is 0.76 mg/kg, the highest among all prefecture-level regions in China. Key agricultural products such as tea, rice, corn, and soybeans contain 3 to 10 times more selenium than the national standard for selenium-rich agricultural products.

Geological Origins: Unique Tectonic and Paleoenvironment

Situated at the subduction zone between the South China and North China Plates, Enshi experiences active geological movements and is rich in geothermal water resources, providing ideal conditions for selenium enrichment. The selenium deposit was formed approximately 260 million years ago during the Permian period, shaped by biological activity and geological sedimentation in an ancient marine environment.

Health Value: The “Spark of Life” and “Cancer Fighter”

Selenium is an essential trace element for the human body, renowned as the “spark of life” and a “cancer fighter.” Its key functions include:

  • Powerful antioxidant properties: As a core component of glutathione peroxidase, it helps neutralize free radicals, delay aging, and protect cell membranes.
  • Immune system enhancement: It stimulates the production of immunoglobulins, boosting the body’s disease resistance.
  • Cancer prevention potential: Studies indicate selenium may help prevent and suppress various cancers, such as liver, lung, and prostate cancer.
  • Cardiovascular protection: It supports heart function and helps prevent hypertension and coronary heart disease.
  • Detoxification: It binds with heavy metals like lead and mercury, facilitating their excretion from the body.

Industry Impact: Selenium-Rich Tea and the Health Sector

Enshi has developed a full industrial chain for selenium-rich agricultural products, with tea as its pillar industry. The selenium in Enshi tea is naturally absorbed from the soil and converted into organic selenium, a form more easily absorbed by the human body. In core tea-growing areas, the selenium content remains stable at around 31 mg/kg (compared to the national standard of 0.25–4.0 mg/kg for selenium-rich tea), making it a reliable dietary source of selenium.

Recognition and Regulatory Protection

In 2011, Enshi was awarded the title “World Selenium Capital” by the 14th International Symposium on Trace Elements in Humans and Animals. To ensure the scientific protection and sustainable use of selenium resources, Enshi enacted China’s first specialized regulation in this field, the “Regulations on the Protection and Utilization of Selenium Resources in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture,”promoting the healthy development of the selenium industry through legal governance.

Enshi’s selenium resources are not only globally unique but also, through systematic industrial development and regulatory protection, a valuable natural treasure that drives the local economy and promotes human health.
